Breakfast for Champions - Advancing DEI-B in Industries: Shaping the Workforce of Tomorrow
We were joined by industry leaders to discuss how DEI-B plays a role in the future workforce. Black Professional Resource Group (PRG) Event: Ta-Nehisi Coates in Conversation
Our Black PRG had the amazing opportunity to see Literary Art's Ta-Nehisi Coates in Conversation at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall on October 22. The event was amazing and insightful.
Thank you to Literary Arts for their support and for sponsoring tickets for a group of Black professionals!
"I've seen Ta-Nehisi speak before," says Amy Vaught, PiD's executive assistant. "The difference this time was I was able to share it with people I can relate to, people who know what it's like to walk in our skin and experience Portland as a Black person. It makes a difference."

Heather designs and promotes solutions to inequality in America. Over her career in public policy, Heather has crafted legislation, testified before Congress and helped shape presidential campaign platforms. Her book The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together spent 10 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and was longlisted for the National Book Award and Carnegie Medal for
Excellence in Nonfiction.

The New York Times called it, “The book that should change how progressives talk about race.” and the Chicago Tribune said, “Required reading to move the country forward...”. It is a Washington Post and TIME Magazine Must-Read Book of 2021. The paperback version was released in February 2022 and the book was adapted into a Spotify podcast by Higher Ground, the production company of Barack and Michelle Obama in June 2022.

Our monthly Member Spotlight highlights a member working diligently to foster equitable, diverse, and inclusive workplaces in our region. This month, we connected with White Bird. White Bird is committed to bringing the best Portland-based, regional, national, and international dance companies to Portland, Oregon, and to fostering the growth of dance in the region.

Native American Heritage Month recognizes the traditions, history, languages, stories, and invaluable contributions of Native American, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and affiliated Island communities. The federal designation was created in 1990 through a presidential proclamation and has since been recognized every November.

In celebration of Native American Heritage Month, PiD reached out to Ronda Rutledge, Executive Director of Ecotrust and citizen of the Cherokee Nation, on what it means to be a Native leader in the Northwest.

"As a Citizen of the Cherokee Nation, I’m proud and honored to work alongside PNW tribes on lands and waters stewardship through Ecotrust. I value my tribe’s cultural traditions and am enjoying learning the beauty of American Indian and Alaska Native tribes in our bioregion. Indigenous people have been living in symbiosis with the planet since time immemorial. So we have much to offer in the way of forest and waterways management as well as food production that mitigates the effects of climate change and helps restore balance between people, planet and profit."
