Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

We asked our Latino Professional Resource Group co-chairs what Hispanic Heritage Month means to them.

Lorena Mancia, Founder and Partner at Criteria

Being Hispanic is very special to me, especially growing up in the Pacific Northwest. My grandparents opened one of the first Mexican restaurants in the region in Hood River, and they set the tone for what it means to be there for your community in an incredibly challenging time for Latinos and farmworkers in particular. It wasn't just a restaurant; it was a safe space. Space to be who Latinos in the community were, speak Spanish, eat really good Mexican food, and talk about home. They were ahead of their time in understanding how important space can be.

Being Hispanic means embracing a rich tapestry of culture, history, and identity that makes me feel pride. It’s a shared language that carries the warmth of my ancestors and a deep sense of community that transcends borders. My Hispanic identity connects me to resilience and gratitude, reminding me of the struggles and triumphs of those who came before me and my own journey. It’s a blend of past and present, guiding my values and inspiring me to celebrate how I was raised, honoring both my roots and the diverse world around me.
